This Is Sparta (Maybe).

Assalamualaikum

I'm a Bio student. I learn about natural selection.
Of course, we learn about fish and moths and other creatures.

I don't know about you, but I can't relate to fish or moths. I don't have gills and I don't have wings.
So, I find human natural selection far more interesting. This

It isn't as boring as it sounds. I promise. ^_^

How does this natural selection happen?
Simple, those that are on top, survive.
Not just rich on-top, ANYTHING ON-TOP.

Now, am I bringing good or bad news? Depends. Let's discuss (well, I'll just do all the discussing and if you have anything to say, comment ^_^)

The most controversial 'anything' is looks
Studies have proven that people that are good-looking have higher chances of survival.
Bitter truth but a truth nonetheless.
You might think, 'hey, that's not fair. We are born with our looks. We can't change it.'
And generally, this is true.
Fair or not, that's what you have. That's what you have.

How, you ask?
There are many ways.
#1 People who are good-looking tend to get granted favours more often/receive help more often.
Sad, but a fact. In public transports, guys give their seats more often to pretty women than average-looking women. You get free coffee (not so common in Malaysia). When I was growing up, my sister was the cute, doll-like, big-eyes, good hair one.
I was the one with the bad teeth. =.= (smiled like a cursed goat for years).
She always got free toys and stuff from people at the car-boot sales.

Don't get me wrong. I got gifts too. I just had to cry for them. :D
A skill acquired after so many years of practice.

#2 People who are good-looking get richer mates.
Simplified, the likeliness that they would starve to dead is close to zero.
They get better medication.
They live in more comfortable conditions.

#3 People who are good-looking get jobs more easily (this is arguable).
 Just an example.
Who was the popular guy/girl in high school that got all the votes and got all the positions?
More often than not, they were in a way, attractive/good-looking.

Never underestimate sexual attraction (if you thought I was being dirty, shame on you =.=)
Pretty people don't like to admit it, but have you ever been average enough to tell?

Now, don't go lashing out on me. I am not saying they have things easy because that is not the case.
Think of it as building the perfect person.
You programme them to have certain characteristics.
Looks, physique, that's just one.
But to say it does not play a part at all?
Now, honey, that's denial.

Another trait is wealth.
Eg:
Mr. Smith is worth $4 billion. He earns money through intelligence (designing software, selling custom made locomotive parts etc) And genes play a part in intelligence.

As we discussed on top, richer people are more prone to have an attractive spouse. His wife, Anna is a model, dead gorgeous.

Furthermore (Oh God, we're using these now), Mr Smith has money to pay for a better education.

They get gorgeous babies. And of course, since the babies inherit the wealth, they become gorgeous AND rich AND smart. A deadly combo. And the cycle continues.
Another explanation to why richer people tend to be better looking/smarter. Vise versa.

Plus points:
-get better medication.
-more chance of having kids (passing down genes). Can pay for IVF whatnot.
-live better
-better nutrition (though nowadays they practice the more-money=more-expensive-crap-that's-bad-for-us principle)
-environment doesn't have third-world-country diseases.

Trait : Intelligence
Some people have a head-start and have better genes (you better pray and thank God if you are blessed in this department because I will smack your head out of jealousy).
But now, now, no need to get arrogant. You may have an IQ of 700 but tis no reason to feel comfortable.
And the rest of you, no need to feel discouraged.

"A person that can read but does not read has no advantage over a man that cannot read."

Get what I'm saying?
Yeah, we can't do nothing about genes but acquired knowledge is just as good.
Learn, study, read. Do whatever. Work hard.
It pays off.

Natural selection does happen in humans.
There are more factors of course than what I mentioned but the point is, there are LOADS of factors.
Some we can control and manipulate, and some we can't.
Stop moping over what we can't change and start doing something about what we can change.

See, it's not so shallow to want to be rich.
This is (not) SPARTA!!!
Remember, you aren't only fighting for your survival. You are also fighting for the survival of your young (who don't exist yet but that is besides the point).

Survival is more than just hacking a person's head off for a piece of bread (pray we don't reach that stage).
The little things. They're more subtle and seem petty.
I guarantee you. It is anything but.
